George Kozar 1949-2015

It is with a profound depth of sadness and prayer that we have to inform the faithful of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and the Ukrainian community, of the death of our beloved parishioner George Kozar at the age of 67. He died April 16th at 10:30pm, in Suburban Hospital, under the loving care of his wife Marcy and family. He was the adored brother of Lilya Datt and the beloved nephew of Olena Warwariv and Sonia Krawec. His death is a shock to our community, for only a few weeks ago he was in Church amidst all of us who loved him. He grew up in our parish and contributed so much to it over the years. St. Andrew Cathedral and its community were very dear to him as he was to us all. We will miss him terribly. Funeral arrangements are being made by the family and you will be informed as soon as they will be available. May his memory be eternal. We express our most sincere condolences to Marcy and his entire family.

"…6For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; 8in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing." Holodomor - Famine 1932-33, Nov. 7-8, DC. Memorial Dedication

It was 1932 - 1933. Holodomor, death inflicted by starvation, was claiming millions of innocents as Stalin waged war on the  Ukrainian countryside. The toll was horrific: in June of 1933, Ukrainians were dying at a rate of 28,000 per day.The populations of entire villages were destroyed. One in six people would succumb to agonizing death by starvation."  (US Committee for Ukrainian Holodomor Genocide Awareness 1932-33 ukrainegenocide.com) Ukrainians have struggled for decades to bring global awareness to this horrific genocide. This effort will be a step closer this coming November 7th, when  Ukrainians unveil a new Memorial to the memory of those who perished as a result of the Holodomor. Please  join us for all the historical events associated with the unveiling.  On Sunday, Nov. 8, Divine Liturgy will be served by Bishop Daniel at 8:15am followed by lunch in our parish hall.

May Her Memory Be Eternal

With great sorrow we are informing you that on Thursday August 11, after a long illness, our much loved and respected Halyna Petrenko, aged 91 years,  has returned to her creator.  For many years, she was a very active member of our Parish and Sisterhood, the latter she was  Head of well into her sixties. Last year St. Andrew Cathedral and Archbishop Antony awarded her with "Lifetime Achievement Award" which expressed many years of dedicated service to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. She also served as  Head of the National Ukrainian Orthodox Sisterhood, and founded the magazine "Vira/Faith", which she was editor of for 20 years. She will be terribly missed. May her memory be eternal.
We express our sincere condolences to her son Jurij and his wife Anya who for long time have been most kind and carrying for the departed Halyna.
